Bhubaneswar: A viral video purportedly showing a drug addict consuming brown sugar inside a traffic aid post near Kharvel Nagar police station in the city has put the police in a spot, prompting authorities to launch an investigation. The video, which was circulated widely on social media, shows the youth allegedly taking drugs inside the traffic assistance booth at Sriya Square on the busy Janpath. The man is later seen lying inside the structure, while cigarette rolls, matchboxes and a suspected intoxicant are seen scattered nearby. The aid post is situated barely 100 metres from Kharvel Nagar police station, raising a question mark about surveillance and policing in one of the city’s busiest commercial stretches.Police said the authenticity of the video is being verified and efforts are underway to identify the person seen in the footage as well as determine when the incident took place.“We have come across the viral video and an inquiry has been initiated. The exact circumstances, including the identity of the person and the timing of the incident, are being verified,” a senior police officer said.Another officer said the department would examine whether there was any negligence on the part of personnel responsible for monitoring the area.“If dereliction of duty is found during the inquiry, appropriate action will be taken. We are also trying to ascertain whether the individual is a habitual offender or involved in drug-related activities,” the officer added.Residents and traders in the area said drug abuse inside a police property is utterly shocking and poses a threat to public safety.“The footage is disturbing. The incident occurred inside a police aid post and close to a police station. The audacity of the addict has put a question mark on the efficacy of the city police. We expect greater vigilance,” said Satyanarayan Swain, a local trader.Police said special drives against narcotics trafficking and consumption are ongoing in the city. “We have intensified crackdown on drug peddlers and consumers. No one found violating the law will be spared,” the officer said.
