IPS officer Nath faces new allegation of bid to frame undertrial in drug case

Bhubaneswar: A day after senior IPS officer Susanta Kumar Nath was removed from the post of director general (DG) of prisons amid allegations of sexual harassment by a former jailer, he found himself in fresh trouble, with another suspended jail officer accusing him of attempting to implicate an undertrial in a false drug case.Nath, who on Monday moved Orissa high court seeking anticipatory bail and quashing of the sexual harassment FIR against him, could not be reached for comments on the fresh allegations.Pradipta Kumar Mahalik (50), who was posted at Balasore district jail and suspended on Oct 13 on charges of negligence and dereliction of duty, submitted a petition to the home department on Monday alleging that Nath ordered him to place brown sugar in the pocket of an undertrial secretly. In the petition, a copy of which TOI has, Mahalik claimed Nath telephoned him on Oct 8 and asked him to come to Bhubaneswar the same day for an urgent meeting.“Despite the Odisha bandh, I travelled to Bhubaneswar that night. The following morning, Bhubaneswar jail superintendent Sarbeswar Sahoo took me to the DG’s residence. While I was waiting outside, Sahoo conveyed to me an instruction issued by the DG to plant brown sugar in the pocket of an undertrial, identified as Rajiv Lochan Das. I refused to carry out the illegal order,” the petition stated. While Mahalik continued to wait outside Nath’s residence, Sahoo went inside and later emerged, asking him to meet the IPS officer at his office.“I met Nath, who asked me to execute the order and assured me of benefits, including money and promotion. I declined because I did not want to implicate an inmate in a narcotics case,” Mahalik said, alleging that his suspension five days later was a consequence of his refusal.A home department official said the allegations would be examined. “We will verify the claims,” the official said.
