Pvt firm manager held in $70,000 IT fraud case

Bhubaneswar: Police on Saturday arrested Abhinav Mohanty, manager of a private firm, in connection with an international IT fraud case involving the alleged fraud of nearly US$70,000 (approximately Rs 66 lakh).Police said the fraud was allegedly carried out by projecting a fake website and fictitious address of a major IT company in the US and operating under the guise of a technical staffing and consulting firm.Investigation revealed that on Nov 17, 2025, the company claiming to be based in Texas, US, entered into a technical consulting services agreement with another company based in New Jersey, US.In the agreement, Mohanty signed as the company’s “business head” purportedly based in the US. Under the terms of the agreement, the other company deployed a consultant named Chaitra Moore and regularly paid her remuneration, while submitting invoices to Mohanty’s company.Between Dec 2025 and June 2026, outstanding dues accumulated to nearly US$70,000 (about Rs 66 lakh), but Mohanty’s company allegedly failed to make any payment.Suspecting foul play, the CEO of the other company visited the address of Mohanty’s company in Texas and discovered that no such office existed there. Subsequent inquiries revealed that the company was actually being operated from IRC Village, Nayapalli, Bhubaneswar.
