Balasore: A half-burnt body of a 60-year-old woman was recovered from the banks of Nuabasa river under Bangiriposhi police station limits in Mayurbhanj district on Saturday morning. The deceased was identified as Malati Kar of Golamundakata village.According to sources, some locals spotted the body while visiting the riverbank for their morning ablutions. After being informed, the woman’s family members reached the spot and allegedly took away the body in haste, attempting to perform the last rites.Villagers, suspecting foul play, intervened and stopped the cremation, demanding an investigation. Several articles, including a water bottle, a pair of shoes, a torch and a half-burnt saree, were reportedly recovered from the spot.Bangiriposhi police reached the site with a team after being informed. The police seized the body and sent it for postmortem. IIC of Bangiriposhi police station, Panchanan Mohanty said a case had been registered. A scientific team visited the spot and collected evidence. The exact cause of death will be ascertained after the postmortem report, he added.
