BHUBANESWAR: A local MEMU passenger train was affected near Khurda Road railway station on Thursday after its pantograph, which draws power from overhead equipment (OHE), got entangled with a damaged OHE component while entering the station, railway officials said.The incident occurred at 5.58pm when the Palasa-Cuttack MEMU (68445) was approaching Khurda Road station.According to railway authorities, the train’s pantograph came in contact with the damaged OHE component, leading to a technical snag.Passengers reported seeing sparks and flames on the roof of the train’s engine.However, East Coast Railway (ECoR) clarified that there was no fire, adding that minor sparking may have occurred when the pantograph got entangled with the damaged overhead equipment.As the train could not move further after the snag, passengers were asked to deboard and were accommodated on other trains to continue their journeys.Train services on the main lines remained unaffected, officials said.“The affected MEMU train was shifted to platform no 6 of Khurda Road station by 6.45pm. Main line traffic continues to operate normally. The train was short-terminated at Khurda Road station,” an ECoR spokesperson said.ECoR sources said technical teams were immediately deployed at the site and restoration work on the overhead equipment was taken up.Railway officials said efforts were underway to restore the damaged OHE infrastructure and normalise operations in the affected section at the earliest.
