Koraput: Heavy rainfall accompanied by strong winds damaged a 132-kV power transmission line, with a transmission tower collapsing at Maliguda in Koraput district on Friday morning and disrupting power supply to the railways.The damage came amid intense rainfall across the district triggered by the deep depression, with Koraput recording an average rainfall of 189.24 mm in the 24-hour period ending at 8 am on Friday.Strong winds caused the transmission tower to collapse and it has fallen on the railway track. The tower was feeding power to the railways. Presently, train communication between Jeypore and Koraput has been affected and the issue will be cleared soon, said Tapan Subudhi, superintending engineer, TPSODL, Jeypore.The transmission tower was managed by OPTCL.According to the district rainfall report, Borigumma recorded the highest rainfall at 307.8 mm, followed by Kotpad at 272 mm, Semiliguda at 267 mm and Jeypore at 258.2 mm. Koraput town received 197 mm of rainfall during the period.Laxmipur recorded 197.2 mm, while Nandapur received 195 mm and Boipariguda 185 mm. Lamtaput and Kundra recorded 158.7 mm and 150.2 mm, respectively. Pottangi received 88.4 mm, while Dasmantpur recorded 89 mm.The incessant rain and strong winds have affected normal life in several parts of the district, with authorities closely monitoring vulnerable locations and critical infrastructure.The district received a cumulative 2,649.3 mm of rainfall across the 14 blocks during the 24-hour period, highlighting the intensity of the weather system over Koraput.Officials said restoration and safety measures would be taken after assessing ground conditions and ensuring the safety of personnel working in the affected area.Meanwhile, the road blockade caused by a landslide at Sunki Ghat was cleared on Friday evening after traffic remained disrupted for several hours.
