During the Pandemic, a Bengali Actor Turned to Modelling, Now He Appears in Film

During 2020-21, when the Covid-19 pandemic slowed down television serial production and broadcasting across the country, several actors working in Bengali television had to look for new work options. Actor Susovan Sonu Roy, who had been active in Aakash Aath, Star Jalsha and Zee Bangla serials since 2019, turned towards modelling during this period. Since 2023, he has been part of advertising campaigns for brands including Holiday Inn Hotel, Dabur, Titan Eye+, Velocity Eyewear, Amazon, Spencer’s, Campus Shoes, Big Bazaar, Biotique, and Fiama Di Wills. After gaining experience in modelling and brand campaigns, he is now associated with the Bengali film Take Care Bhalobasa, where he appears in the role of ‘Joy’.

In 2025, Susovan participated in the Kolkata-based pageant competition ‘Ethnic Elegance 2025’, where he finished as the first runner-up.

Before modelling, his work was primarily connected to television. In 2019, he began his acting career with the Akash Aath serial Anandamoyee Maa. Directed by the late filmmaker Debidas Bhattacharya, the mythological serial featured Roy in the role of a Vaishnav devotee. Between 2019 and 2021, he appeared in Star Jalsha productions Mohor, Korapakhi, Titli and Khelaghar. In Korapakhi, he portrayed a negative character opposite actress Parno Mitra. He was also part of the Zee Bangla serial Jamuna Dhaki.

Before television, Susovan’s earliest connection with performance came through dance. While pursuing a Commerce degree from Dum Dum Motijheel Rabindra Mahavidyalaya in 2016, he trained in Western dance for nearly two years and participated in various stage shows and cultural programmes in Kolkata. His interest later shifted towards acting. Between 2016 and 2018, he attended acting workshops for almost two years under the guidance of director and producer Pijush Saha.

Roy was born on 19 July 1994 in Howrah, West Bengal, and spent part of his childhood in Guwahati. He lost his father at the age of three and a half, after which his mother took sole responsibility for raising the family.

Film Take Care Bhalobasa revolves around four friends and the emotional changes that develop within their relationships. Joy appears at several points where the dynamics between the characters begin to shift. The character is presented through quiet reactions and moments of uncertainty rather than overt dramatic confrontations.

After completing his B.Com degree in 2016, Roy spent the next few years in acting workshops and auditions before entering television. Between 2019 and 2021, he worked in Bengali serials aired on Akash Aath, Star Jalsha and Zee Bangla. In the years that followed, he became associated with modelling assignments and advertising campaigns, while also participating in the Kolkata-based ‘Ethnic Elegance 2025’ competition. His work across television, modelling and film has largely involved character-based and supporting roles.
