
Bengaluru: A special court for elected representatives in Bengaluru on Friday convicted former Member of Parliament from Karnataka and grandson of former Prime Minister HD Deve Gowda, Prajwal Revanna, in a rape case. The quantum of punishment will be pronounced by the court on Saturday.Special Court Judge Gajanan Hegde held Prajwal guilty of raping a 48-year-old woman, who worked as a maid at the Gowda family’s farmhouse near Hassan, 110 km from Bengaluru. The victim, who is from K R Nagar in Mysuru district, had accused Prajwal of having raped her twice in 2021 and also filming the act on his mobile phone.Revanna broke down in the court hall immediately after his conviction. Prior to the judgment, he was also seen chanting mantras seeking divine intervention. Prajwal is facing three more cases of sexual assault and rape, trials of which are in different stages.Prajwal’s ‘sex scandal’ came to light after pen-drives and video clips containing explicit videos involving him were circulated in Hassan, ahead of the 2024 Lok Sabha polls. A day after the polling, Prajwal left the country owing to protests and a public outcry for his arrest. Prajwal lost the election by 40,000 votes. The Karnataka government had formed a Special Investigation Team (SIT) to probe into the allegations.Revanna was arrested on May 31, 2024, when he returned from Germany. Since then, he has been lodged in the Parappana Agrahara jail here. The SIT, which probed into the case, had filed a 1,32 page charge sheet with 113 witnesses.Prajwal’s parents also faced the heatPrajwal’s parents, former Minister H D Revanna and Bhavani Revanna, have also been facing the heat of their son’s scandals. Both have been accused of abducting the victim in order to prevent her from testifying against their son.When the scandal broke out, the victim was allegedly abducted by one Rajgopal, on the behest of Revanna and Bhavani and kept here in a farm house in Hunsur taluk in Mysuru district. Later, she was rescued by the SIT police. Revanna, who was arrested by the SIT police, was currently on bail. His wife escaped from going to jail after the Karnataka High Court granted her anticipatory bail.
